The Ahmedabad crime branch, headed by deputy commissioner of police, Abhay Chudasama, on Tuesday arrested two legal professionals from Padli area, demanding money in exchange for withdrawing an affidavit filed against the likely merger of RIL and Reliance Petroleum Limited.
The two persons Jayendra Shah and his associate Dilip Motwani are said to be working as company secretaries-cum-lawyers in the city. They had reportedly asked for Rs 50 lakh to withdraw the PILs filed in Gujarat and Maharashtra high courts against companies owned by Reliance group.
A crime branch official, Tarun Barot, said, “During the initial questioning, the duo has confessed that to stall the merger, they had filed petitions in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The amalgamation of the companies is still in process.”
Shah asked for Rs 5 lakh in March for revocation of cases besides filing complaints with market regulator SEBI, Union ministry of Company Affairs and Registrar of Companies.
He further warned serious consequences to the officials for failing to pay at least Rs 10 lakh by Tuesday.
RIL officials, after tracing them through mobile phone, approached the crime branch to get them booked for alleged blackmailing.
