Ahmedabad , May 31 A conman alleged of duping crores of rupees from people in the name of Godess was today arrested with Rs 1.98 crore in cash while trying to escape the city, police said.
On a specific information, police caught Ashok Jadeja of the Chara community and his wife Neetu early this morning from the Shyamal Cross Road area, they said.
“We had information that Jadeja would be trying to escape from the city. So we set up watch on his movements and arrested him and his wife this morning,” Deputy Superintendent of CID (crime) R K Patel told reporters here.
” From their car we have recovered Rs 1.98 crore cash,” Patel adding that several complaints were filed against Jadeja in Ahmedabad and Rajasthan.
” Jadeja was part of inter-state network engaged in conning people by exploiting their religious beliefs,”he said.
Jadeja, who is accused of running away with people&aposs money to the tune of Rs 12 crore, began operations in the city in January by posing as disciple of Godess of&aposSikotra&aposand promised people of his Chara community (a denotified tribe) that their money would be tripled if it is deposited with him.
After collecting a huge sum of money, Jadeja had disappeared on May 13, police said adding three of Jadeja&aposs associates were arrested last week.
“We were operating a chain scam and some top leaders of the society were involved in it,” Jadeja said after his arrest.
