Gmail has a new feature in its labs section aimed at people with bad connections who still want to use the fancypants JavaScript-filled “new” version of the popular Web mail service. It shows a quick preview of the latest 10 messages while Gmail’s loading bar makes its slow march toward completion.
You can’t actually read these messages, but you can quickly see if you have new ones. Users on a fast connection will only see the preview for a mere second or two before the in-box opens up. But for those on the very thread of a cellular data line, or on some chuggy dial-up, Google is pitching this as a simple way to see if those latest messages are worth the loading wait.
While relatively useless to users with fast connections, this is still a nice alternative to switching over to the HTML version of Gmail, which survives for the sake of compatibility on older machines and browsers. The switch over to that version forgoes many niceties such as no page refreshing, and the use of Gmail labs features.
Weeks after leaving the media spotlight, the Conficker malware infection continues to spread, according to experts.
Researchers at security firm Symantec have reported that the botnet is still claiming victims at a rate of 50,000 a day. Infections are the highest in the US, Brazil, India, China, Mexico and Italy.
“Much of the media hype seems to have died down around Conficker/Downadup, but it is still out there spreading far and wide,” the researchers wrote in a blog post.
Conficker spread throughout the world during the early part of the year. When researchers discovered that the third variant was designed to dial a control server on 1 April, a media storm erupted.
The malware failed to perform any sort of significant attack, but continued to spread throughout April. Researchers discovered later in the month that a new variant was making the rounds.
Since the frenzy died down, Conficker has been eclipsed in the public eye by more prolific attacks, such as the recent Gumblar infection.
Yahoo has glued its social news site Buzz to Yahoo India homepage. India is the first lucky country to get the Buzz service outside the U.S. market. Yahoo! Buzz is Digg-like service that allows discovering, submitting, commenting on news stories and even voting for the most liked ones.
Yahoo! Buzz gets pumped with the content from 20,000 publishers worldwide. On the other hand, Yahoo! Buzz India currently features content from two dozen local publishers like The Times of India, NDTV, India Today Group, Zee, A2 Media and One India. Yahoo! Buzz can be accessed directly from http://in.buzz.yahoo.com/.
Yahoo! Terms Buzz as a “social news site” since users can submit, comment and vote on several stories. Also, web surfers get to know about variety of news. It is indeed an interesting way to put across popular and engaging news stories that are submitted by humans and not bots. At the moment, Yahoo! Buzz is available in English and Yahoo! does not have any immediate plans to launch it in local Indian languages.
Frazier Miller, head of audience at Yahoo India, said Yahoo may integrate advertisements into Buzz in order to generate revenue.
Yahoo! Buzz button would be visible on the websites
of participating Indian publishers.

It’s not just the search engine team who are busy over at Google: the Gmail staffers are putting in the hours to add some snazzy new features as well.
As spotted by CNet yesterday, Gmail now supports – finally – the ability to easily import message and contacts from your existing webmail service, making it as easy as possible to give Google access to every e-mail you ever send or receive.
Users of the popular free web-based e-mail service may have spotted a change to the Settings function, which has changed the “Accounts” tab to read “Accounts and Import.” By filling in the relevant details in the new tab, users are able to import both messages and address book entries from a fairly impressive selection of mail providers.
The supported providers list reads like a roll-call of webmail services including Microsoft’s Hotmail, MSN, and Live.com services along with a selection of ISPs including Orange, Freeserve, and Tiscali. If your particular service isn’t included, Google will be adding to the list over the coming months as the service rolls out across all Gmail users.
The importation technology – which is powered by TrueSwitch from Esaya – even allows for a soft crossover period, whereby messages sent to the old account for the next thirty days will be automatically forwarded to your Gmail account. Google does mention, however, a 24-48 hour delay both for the initial import and any subsequent messages received – so you may want to ensure that the more important contacts change your e-mail address sooner rather than later.
The new functionality, which Google describes as “currently available to only a small subset of Gmail users” comes as the company starts to feel the competition from rival webmail services including Microsoft’s Hotmail. With other webmail services matching Gmail’s impressive storage offering byte-for-byte, it’s clear that Google needs to make life as easy as possible if they’re going to convince people it’s worth making the switch.

Microsoft has unveiled a toolkit for PHP developers building open-source applications that help fluff its planned Azure cloud.
PHPAzure is a software development kit (SDK) for programming to both Windows Azure and the underlying SQL-like Windows Azure Storage service’s blobs, tables, and queues. PHPAzure is an open-source project developed with RealDolmen and hosted on Microsoft’s CodePlex site.
The PHPAzure community technology preview (CTP) was unveiled by Microsoft India and is due for completion on August 21. Azure is itself currently in CTP and has been promised for delivery by the end of this year.
PHP is one of the web’s most popular programming languages, running more than 20 million sites. It’s also used in conjunction with Apache, Linux, and MySQL - a web server, operating system, and database combo that Microsoft is in competition with.
Microsoft’s recognized the importance of winning over PHP developers and has worked with Zend Technologies to fine-tune PHP to Windows until now. The risk was developers would otherwise build their PHP applications on Windows and deploy on Linux instead.
With PHP being a default web-programming environment, Microsoft has accepted it must embrace the language as a way to populate Azure with applications, moving it from a standing stop.
PHPAzure sounds like a framework for PHP programmers to build to Azure and its underlying storage system rather than a new language from Microsoft. Features include PHP classes for Windows Azure blobs, tables, and queues, for HTTP transport, AuthN/AuthZ, REST, and error management, and there is manageability, instrumentation, and logging support. You can read more on the architecture here.

Sybase has announced plans for its server products to work in Amazon’s cloud. The company said it’ll make Amazon Machine Images (AMIs), developer guides, and developer software for its software freely available for development and testing. Sybase is also working with Amazon to devise “flexible utility computing models” of its software to enable pay-per-use billing on the Amazon cloud.
Once a database contender to Oracle, Sybase today has a diverse set of products covering mobile and business intelligence. But the announcement will likely only apply to its database and data integration and replication products. It will expand the number of database options available on Amazon and keep Sybase in the game - though it’s coming a little late. Amazon’s EC2 currently offers IBM’s DB2 and Informix, Oracle 11g, Microsoft’s SQL Server Standard Edition 2005, and MySQL Enterprise.
Sybase also said it’s working with Symantec and its Veritas Storage Foundation to optimize its Virtualized Resource Management framework from the company’s ASE Cluster Edition for use in cloud-based storage. ®
Sony
has announced the launch of the world’s thinnest LCD TV in the country along with dozens of other new models to strengthen their current crop of offerings in the mid to high end segment.
The highlight of the launch however was the announcement of the Bravia ZX1, which at 9.9mm happens to be the world’s thinnest 40″ LCD TV. And soon it will be on sale in India! Apart from being slim, this one is quite light as well, tipping the scales at just 15.5 kg. The slim form factor doesn’t mean that features have been compromised upon. In fact, this might just be one of the most feature-packed LCD TV’s out there.
The ZX1 features Bravia Engine2, Edge LED technology, Motionflow 100Hz and Image Blur reduction as image techniques to reproduce premium pictures with vivid and vibrant tonal range. As expected, the TV supports a Full HD display resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels. For easy integration with compatible BRAVIA products, it comes with Theatre Sync and possesses outstanding audio enhancement features like a digital amplifier, S-Force Surround, voice zoom and Dolby digital plus.
For wireless freaks who wouldn’t want themselves caught fiddling with messy wires, say hello to Wireless HD that enables the users to enjoy Full HD quality images without any messy wires or cables. The TV comes packed with four independent HDMI inputs, a PC input, composite inputs, component inputs, USB connection, and a RGB compatible SCART input.
Apart from the ZX1, the company has also announced the addition of as many as fourteen new TV’s to the S, V, W and Z series. The new TV’s launched will be priced between the Rs. 16,000 and Rs. 2.99 lakh range and will range from 20″ entertainers to 50″ monsters. The price of the ZX1 is yet to be announced.
